Warning: Listening to reggaeton music may lead to cultural degradation and females removing their pants.
In America today, most of what passes as “popular” music is created by no-talent ass clowns with little musical or song-writing talent. Despite this fact, I have still tried extra hard over the years to be open-minded to certain genres of music that do not immediately appeal to me. In fact, I am often hard-pressed to find any genre of music for which I cannot identify at least one artist or particular diddy that I may find mildly acceptable, save for perhaps Slovenia-style polka. This noble attempt at open-mindedness, however, completely went out the window a few years ago when I began hearing the same simple beat blaring from the cars of my Latin-American brothers and sisters in and around Lawrence, Massachusetts.
This one simple beat (that goes a lil something like this: boom-chicka-boomchick-boom-chicka-boomchick, ad infinitum) has since expanded into an entirely new genre of Latino rap music called reggaeton. I am perhaps too conscious of sounding culturally insensitive in my critique of this “music,” but I can’t say much more about it other than the fact that it’s just plain fucking awful and disgraceful. If I was Latin-American, I would personally take great offense to the popularity of this music that is contributing to such a rich culture’s musical degradation (much like Italian Americans should be offended by their Jersey Shore counterparts).
There is plenty of contemporary rap music that I consider to be just as worthless as reggaeton in many ways, but somehow not nearly as infuriating. Reggaeton is so annoying because it has become an entire genre of music that essentially consists of the same song reproduced by a million different artists who put a little spin on it. I cannot imagine listening to a radio station that exclusively plays this music. What do they say when the latest reggaeton song is first aired? Perhaps it would go something like this: “And now for your listening pleasure, some asshole who threw in a few extra words on top of the same beat loop that has been featured in the previous 1,000 songs we have played: Here’s the new one from Enrique Suave.”

I get naseaus everytime I hear that friggen beat blaring outside my apartment in Brooklyn.
ReplyDeleteFunny post, dude. I know exactly what you mean.
ReplyDeleteReggaeton is not a real genre. It's just one song- one beat pattern on an infinite loop...it's just a dead-end off disco.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't mind it. I mean it's base and sophmoric, but so was disco. Almost any music can contribute 'something', and this is far from the worst I've heard.
ReplyDelete...not my first pick in music, but it sure is nice to dance to at parties, all about that sexy beat ^_^;
ReplyDeletePD, I see your point about reggaeton not being an actual genre of music. Perhaps I should have chosen a better word. It is, however, its own distinct category of music even though it may technically be considered a subset of a larger genre. It is a category of music that now claims a substantial number of artists who are creating substantial amounts of albums and songs. And all of this material, again, out of the same fucking beat. That is the point; the same fucking beat!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything, but what's wrong with the women taking off their pants?
ReplyDeleteLook, its the same beat maybe cuz that's what people want to dance to?! Stop being glued to a computer and go to a fucking party and you'll know what i mean. I mean I hate reggaeton as much as the next guy, but you DANCE to it. Stop being them lame ass critics, loosen up, and hit a real party once in your life.
ReplyDeletereggaeton is a shit!!!

ReplyDeletethis proves the bloggers point. your attitude directly reflects the shitty quality of reggeaton. Reggeaton is the worst kind of music to hit the speakers. Bar none. It is shit.
I am latino and I know there is nothing to understand about reggaeton but is degrading for our latinamerican cultures to be related to something as disgusting as reggaeton...
ReplyDeleteThere is not any imagination, talent, feeling or something but stupidness in that piece of shit, but contempt for the real music.
Reggaeton is only another way to make money taking advantage of ignorance and stupidness of the people.
As a latino a can say that the increasing production and popularity of reggaeton is one the result of the generalized ignorance and the prevailing terrible education systems in our countries.
The reality today is that reggaeton is omnipresent at the TV shows and the radio.
When you are walking in any street at any time you will here that in almost all the stereos in the cars and in the houses.
Reggaeton represents the decandence of these societies.
This situation is totally awful.
Greetings from Mexico.
Hi, greetings from Costa Rica!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, IDK why I thought reggaeton was hated only inside Latin America, maybe because USA is so big and has so much influences from around the world that this shitty music would be just one more from all the shit out there.
As the guy over me says, in our countries reggaeton is associated to people with few or none education (you already saw the reaction of the reggaeton-deffender 3 posts above), also to those from the poorest towns and cities. Actually when we see a reggaeton-fashioned guy on the streets we think he's about to rob us, something that doesn't happen with metalheads or any other subculture.
It's funny that even on GTA 4 there's a reggaeton radio station, an d when you rob cars, they're more likely to have tuned this station when you take the car near marginal neighborhoods than in the city hahahahaha.
Ok, it's true that this music is really really really popular at night clubs, but one thing is listening to and dancing it FOR A COUPLE HOURS and another thing is listening to it ALL THE FREAKIN' DAY!!! The same fucking beat on every single song... Thank god you probably don't understand spanish so you don't have to endure those "epic lyrics"
in my opinion, THIS IS REAL LATINO MUSIC!!!
